Ben's Cream Cheese

$7.99/EA
Lauded in the New York Times, The New Yorker and Gourmet Magazine, this Lower East Side Dairy tradition redefines - or better yet, is the original definition of - cream cheese. Sweet with a hint of tang, what really sets Ben's apart is its consistency: clean, thick, creamy, and dense, devoid of gums and stabilizers, not grainy, not gummy. Rich in texture and in history, this pure product puts the Philly stuff in the tinfoil envelope to shame.

Ben's was originally made by Ben Gorodinsky on East Houston Street near the other peddlers of Jewish foodways such as Gus' Pickles, Russ & Daughters Appetizing, Moishe's Bakery and Yonah Schimmel Knish Bakery. In 1970 an Orthodox Jewish family, the Friedmans, bought the company, which they operated in its original storefront until 2007, at which point gentrification led them to close the shop and move production to Spring Valley in upstate New York. The Friedmans have followed Ben's original methods of production and secret recipe with high quality results.

Ben's cream cheese is delicious, of course, but it is also special because it maintains a link with an important part of New York City's culinary legacy. Have some history on your bagel.
