Lively Run Dairy has been a pioneer in American goat cheese since 1982. Over the decades, they’ve perfected the craft of goat’s milk wheels like Finger Lakes Gold, a firm, nutty cheese with a touch of sweetness. Expert cheesemakers coax out a lovely butteriness from the goat’s milk, while a touch of tang remains at the finish. With a smear of Three Little Pigs Puddletown Pub Chutney, it makes a snackable addition to a board or a picnic-worthy sandwich.

“This goat cheese is buttery, with a great texture. I love it with Effie's Oatcakes to bring out the sweetness and a drizzle of maple syrup to really indulge.”

  • Four months of aging gives Finger Lakes Gold its golden natural rind, formed in temperature- and humidity-controlled rooms where the air naturally dries the outside of the cheese with little intervention from the cheesemaker.
  • That length of maturation means that the cheese develops its firm texture while still retaining enough moisture to melt beautifully.
  • Goat’s milk has around the same fat content as cow’s milk, but because of a difference in fat structure, goat cheese often feels lighter on the palate.
  • In Finger Lakes Gold, the cheesemakers are able to capture a slightly richer, more buttery texture, instead of the graininess that can sometimes be found in goat cheeses.
  • With its mellow flavor and melting abilities, Finger Lakes Gold works beautifully in frittatas, grilled cheese, and gratins.
  • Located in the Finger Lakes region in upstate New York, Lively Run Dairy is one of the longest operating goat dairies in the United States.
  • When it started production in 1982, Lively Run was a pioneer in American-made goat cheese.
  • The Messner family has run the farm and dairy since 1995—parents Steve and Susanne eventually welcomed their sons Pete and Dave into the business.
  • Since Pete took over as head cheesemaker in 2013, he has expanded Lively Run’s products to include more aged goat cheeses and cow’s milk cheeses.
  • Their goat herd is made up of French Alpines and Swiss Saanens, who are fed a diet of local forage and feed to capture the terroir of the Finger Lakes region in their goats’ milk and, eventually, Lively Run’s cheeses.
